Hot Sauce Recommendations!

Spent a fabulous week on STJ, and stayed on Coral Bay side in Island Horizons villa. I really wanted to meet Ruth at St. John Spice and get some Hot Sauce, but we were never in Cruz Bay long enough to get it done. So - I'm thinking of ordering some and having her ship it to me in Kentucky.

Okay - anyone have a favorite you'd like to recommend that I try? I'll likely use it for wings, in Gumbo and Chili and maybe something sweet and spicy to eat right on a cracker.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts!

My favorite is "Scorned Woman". I personally think it is too hot straight up, but I put it in a lot of things as we like things spicy. I like to put it BBQ sauce and then on ribs or chicken.

My favorite is Trinidad Charlie's Hot Pepper Sauce. It is produced on island and I think he grows his own hot peppers. For what it's worth Kenny Chesney mentions drinking with him in a song. But whenever I use it I think of St John. It is not super hot but hot enough and it has a distinctive flavor. All organic and no preservatives.

I also like Valley Doll Hot Sauce but I don't think Ruth sells it. The only place that sells it that I know of is Shipwreck Landing. I'm sure there is a story there. Valley Doll is another hot but not super hot sauce with a strong flavor of curry.

The Blind Betty assortment, especially the citrus one is also good.

Trinidad Charlie's (original, not pumpkin) is a favorite. Also love Valley Doll, but it definitely is more of a curry than pepper sauce, imho. Friends of ours recommend Miss Anna's and Roadkill, both available at STJ spice.

Another vote for Valley Doll. That stuff ROCKS! But I am not sure that Ruth sells it. She does sell Montoucks (sp?) which I like ALOT.

For Gumbo, I recommend Crystal Hot Sauce from Louisiana.

For others, Valley Doll is AWESOME! I also like Uncle Jerome's. RickG makes some mean hot sauce too!

Thanks for the recommendations - keep them coming! When I order, I'd like to get a variety of flavors and textures - make the order worth paying for shipping and waiting for!

I once had a red-pepper jelly that was great on sandwiches - any recommendations along the line of "spreads"?

If your looking to fill out an order at St. John Spice you can't go wrong ordering the Cruz Bay Grill Rub. We probably use it way too much but it is so much easier than putting our own together. We like it.

My new favorite is Trinidad Charlie's West Indian Sizzle. It's got a curry undertone to it that I've never tasted in a hot sauce before. I especially like it on swordfish or pork, especially when they're given a sprinkle of Cruz Bay Grill Rub before cooking. (You'll need to order some of the grill rub, you know. It's great stuff.)

Jerome's is our favorite. It has a lot of habanero flavor and heat as well as wonderful herbal notes. It's usually too hot to eat straight, but it's great to cook with. I like Trinidad Charlie's orginal and the kids like the aromatic west indian curry flavor when it is added to foods.

We make our own hot sauce too. We're a little behind and have gallon bags of peppers in the freezer. My favorite home-made from last year is a green jalapeno sauce. Home-made hot sauce is ridiculously easy if you have a food mill. Our buddy Tim (STJ lover, but not on the forum) makes a dozen hot sauces. His smoked Sriracha is quite amazingly good.

Still, Jerome's is better than our home-made.

Cheers, RickG
