Why are there so many people from Boston on St. John? My wife and I have noticed that we have maybe met one person from New York on St. John but have met countless people from Boston there. I wonder why? We always enjoy them. Their always pleasant. My mother also noticed this phenomenon. Any ideas?

Good point,we kind of noticed that too. I live in Jersey just outside of Philly, and find plenty of STJ fans around here,as well. Rich Meyers ,owner of the Lime Inn,for instance, sells real estate not far from where I live. I pass his office everyday on the way to work, come to think of it...
Strange...
Maybe the owners of some of the shops/restaurants on STJ invited friends down for a vaca, and (no big surprise!) they got "the bug", too.
Isn't there supposed to be loads of $ in New England? Beats me...
As I said before, I'm just glad everyone leaves their North East disposition at the airport, and are unknowingly helping us all enjoy how gorgeous STJ is. Everyone's always nice, no road rage, and happy to just be there! It's somehow SO OBVIOUS when someone's being rude/out of place down there, no?
I just hope they all remember to bring some kindness home with them, and help make the rest of the folks up here relax! I know I do!

I agree. I think this place transforms most people into who we really should be. If this place doesn't cool you out and make you a fun lovin person...you ain't gonna ever be one

Amen, Russ!
I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to hereby start reading your posts in a southern accent. I'm not sure that's possible, but, I'm gonna' give it a whirl!

We've definitely noticed this. Long cold winters and reasonable airfares maybe? That does it for me!

hmmm there are direct flights from NY too....
new englanders tend to gravitate in that direction--there are a LOT of mainers, New hampshire folks and Cape codders or coastal mass folks--so boat-life and year around sun.....

No prob MahoJim, you'll sound like my mother. She doesn't sound like Paula Dean or anything but she has a southwest Oklahoma twang that gets lots of attention in places like St. John. She's a hit anywhere she goes.

You're right P-600... the weather um, get's a little old. I'm planning on skiing this morning, but as it's 5 degrees, I think I'll give it a couple of hours.
We're from VT and met many people from VT & NH while we were on the island in December. And as MahoJim mentioned, I'm one of those people who will now be dragging more Vermonters down to STJ in May.
DH and I may go for another trip in December. At first he questioned it, and then I mentioned that we didn't run into any "lame American tourists" on STJ (he's British). He laughed and said "you're right; everyone was pretty cool." LOL

I'm sure direct flights and a cold winter have a lot to do with it. But as a total outsider, it does strike me that St. John might have qualities that appeal to New Englanders---quaint, boating-oriented, nature-oriented. By contrast St. Martin and St. Barts, for example-- might have certain qualities that appeal a bit more strongly to New Yorkers---more sophisticated, international ambiance, better restaurants. Those are gross over-generalizations, of course, but just thought I'd put it out there.
Not sure what appeals to Iowans, but there are a few of us on this Board too!

i should also mention that some new englanders say they are from boston even if they are from the surrounding area (southern nh, southern me). it's just easier.
hubby and i live in southern nh but we just say boston or north of boston. people know where boston is, they don't know where plaistow is.

Lysa, I know where Plaistow is
You're right though, I do say Boston because it's easier...
