Just saw an atricle in Virgin ISalnds Daily News. CA Harbor is being dredged to allow entry for those ginormous ( SD's word) new cruise ships. Maybe we should paper the dock with that article about how bad crime is on St. John so they will stay away. :-)

I took this picture of one of those mega ships leaving Puerto Vallarta. I truly can't imagine 2 or 3 of these sitting in Charlotte Amalie! Yikes!!

They want STT's docks and port to be capable of receiving Royal Caribbean's new Genesis class ships. Oasis of the Seas, the first of three Genesis class ships being built:

http://www.oasisoftheseas.com

She will have a park intended to have greenery, a mall-like boardwalk, zip line, and much more.

5400 guests
220,000 gross tons
Length 1,181'
Beam 154'
Height above waterline 213'
Draft: 30'
Power 8 17,500 HP engines (that's 140,000 HP!)

I'm not a cruiser, but I have to admit it will be pretty impressive.

Hopefully its just the lighting of the picture, but doesn't that ship look like a naval vessel?

Forget about the fact that I've sworn that I'll never go on a cruise again, but that thing hardly looks appealing, even if I were interested.

As a trekkie, I'm just dyin' here!!  Your description is so perfect!

Actually, I think crasherino is on to something with the lighting. It was sunset and that is a greatly zoomed picture, so it's probably very "flat". I did see it closer up in port, but I couldn't tell you what it looked like. :?

Ok, it looked pretty weird to me too, so I looked it up on the web and here's the same ship, with proper lighting.

My picture was not very flattering, I guess.

But it's still one big friggin' ship!
