Work brings me to DC next week. I will have some time off during a couple of the week days. I've done all the regular tourist stuff: Smithsonian, Arlington, Zoo etc. Does anyone have an Off the Beaten Path suggestion for a morning or afternoon? I'm staying in the Dupont Circle area and can visit anything accessible via Metro.

I'm not a DC'er, but the Holocaust and Spy Museums are both good takes.

I strongly recommend the Phillips Art Museum. It's in an old mansion just about a block or two from Dupont Circle. As you exit the Dupont metro escalator, go left. You will see signs for it below the street signs.

They have a solid collection and it's in a cool setting.

Georgetown is always a fun place. Metro does not have a stop there but I think you can get there by the bus or take a cab.

If you are into shopping, there are some great stores there and lots of nice places to eat.

Another fun place is the National Zoo. We are expecting nice weather in the 50's next week. Might be able to see the Pandas.

The National Gallery of Art has a Pompeii display going on now. (I've always been fascinated by Pompeii, so I want to get down there.) Website says "Pompeii and the Roman Villa presents some 150 works of sculpture, painting, mosaic, and luxury arts, including recent discoveries..."

Thanks everyone! Great suggestions. Looks like I'm going to be busier next week than I thought! I never imagined that I would celebrate weather in the 50's, but I think I will next week! YEAH!

Take 15 minutes and go to the Phillips just to see the painting,"Luncheon of the Boating Party."

I kid you not. I'm not a big art guy, but it blew me away. You'll see what I mean if you do it. It's kind of a secret...you have to actually see it to get it.

As it turns out, I will be traveling home for a funeral this week and won't have any off time in DC. But I have passed your suggestions on to my boss...he is an "art guy" and I'm sure he will appreciate the Phillips.

Well, if you're still staying in Dupont, the Brickskeller has a world-class beer selection (Guinness World Record) and Johnny's Half Shell is a great restaurant. Dupont's a fun area.

I was struck by how huge the painting is. Marcia and I were mesmerized by it. And, yes, it is at the Phillips.

The Phillips is so cool because the building itself is so cool.
