We'll be home from our trip 3 weeks tomorrow. How long does it usually take to get your security deposit back? What is reasonable to expect?

It depends on the agency. I've had deposits returned in 2 weeks and one agency took over 3 months. I'd call the agent that you dealt and ask them what you might expect.

In other, non-STJ rentals, when I've had an email dialogue with the owner or agent, I've tried to at least get confirmation from them that they agreed that there was no damage, etc.

I had one bad experience where an owner came back to me 6 weeks later with a litany of things that he claimed was broken/misplaced, etc. Some may (or may not) have been valid, but the majority were total BS. It was very hard to debate/dispute, however, when it was almost 2 months after the fact.
