Five "unusual" things that you leave at home

Inspired by the other thread, I was thinking how there are a lot more things that I leave at home for STJ, that I would usually take with me traveling elsewhere.
1. Laptop... Sorry, dear message board. I do not want to have anything to do with you when I'm on island time.
2. Make up (mostly)... Okay, so I do pack the mascara and concealer for dinner out, but everything else is just dead weight.
3. Books... The villa we typically stay at has a bookshelf full of books. I'll read 3 or 4 that I would never usually pick out if given limitless choices. I've found some incredible new authors this way.
4. Cell phone... Partial lie. I do bring it, but as soon as we hit the villa, I turn it off for the whole week. I'll turn it on when we get on the ferry.
5. An abundance of clothing options... Usually I pack with the idea that I want to have choices of what to wear each day. For STJ it's the opposite. Couple bathing suits, couple t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, DONE.
I'm excited to hear everyone else's!

- Northeast tension, brought upon by folks who have clearly been to STJ
- Clothes ( I prefer to go nude as frequently as possible)
- I'm with sasky on the cell phone thing
- Road rage (not ME, per say, but the whole idea of it. Those folks have never been to STJ either, I'm guessing...)
- Shoes-again, flops & water shoes only
- Narrow mindedness ( I pretty much know what I'm in for here in Jersey, but when I go away I'm more than open to try new ideas.)

- Stress
- Socks
- Laptop
- Makeup
- Major jewelry (engagement ring, all gemstones, the 'good stuff')
I do bring my cell phone because my husband brings his AT&T Crackberry, which we use for our emergency contact number, and when on separate activities we can stay in touch. I have Version -- after snorkeling at Gibney, I turned on my cell to see if he had left me a message. I immediately see that I have a text message. Confused, since I don't have web capabilities on my phone, I check it -- "Welcome to the British Virgin Islands!" it said. Learning about the high-priced cell phone calls from BVI towers on this forum, I immediately shut off the phone!!!

It's funny. I never thought about it before, but there ARE several things I take everywhere else but that I NEVER take to STJ:
1) My diamond. I never wear it there.
2) Curling iron/Hair Dryer. Now y'all know why I look a mess when I am down there.
3) Socks
4) Close-toed shoes (nope, no sneakers)
5) I shouldn't admit this...but...I never even take a bra. Hey, when you are built like a 13 year old boy, it's completely unnecessary.

1) make-up
2) shoes
3) laptop (I pretend that computers don't exist on St. John)
4) Work. It can all wait for seven days. Really, it can.
5) whiners

I'm very excited for this trip as it's is my first vacation to the islands doing carry-on only....Just trying to keep things simple.
1. I refuse to bring long pants to the Caribbean. Yes, I've suffered a few times traveling from Boston upon return
2. Food. It's vacation, and I'm sure I can simply get what I need when I'm there regardless if it cost a few dollars more.
3. Cell phone is with me, but I shut it off 99% of the week. I will make a few calls to my 4 year old son, and one or two to my business....that's it.
4. Watch....who the hell cares what time it is down there?
5. socks....nuff said....but I do need my sneakers!!

Everyone posting that they don't brings socks reminds me of a funny story. We took my Mom and Dad to STJ in 2003. When they asked about packing, I told Mom that Dad wasn't allowed to pack any socks. I was kidding, of course...you know...the whole "old man in black socks" vision in my head. Well, she took it literally and didn't allow Dad to pack any socks, against his protests.
He had no socks the entire trip. He got blisters. I felt so bad.
We have laughed about it ever since.
