Conclusion to "Trip Report- First Half, Jan 25-27"
Travelers: Two New England couples, ages 51 thru 58, second trip to St. John. Fairly active people, not into parties/nightlife. Enjoy good food, beaches and water sports.
-----------------
Wednesday morning was rainy and cool, so we hung out at the villa reading and relaxing. But soon the sun came out, as it always does, so we had a nice lunch at The Balcony (they do lunch better than dinner) then took a drive out to the Annaberg ruins. When we arrived, there was a distraught woman saying she could not find her friend; they had been snorkeling at Waterlemon and had not seen each other for a while. Police and rescue were called, both arrived while we walked around the ruins. Happy ending, the woman was found and all was well. We stopped at the smoothie place on our way back to the villa, best smoothie I've ever had! After more relaxing/napping/dip in the pool, we had a great dinner at Happy Fish.
Thursday was another scuba diving morning for the guys so we gals went to Jumbie for some snorkeling. We've decided that we are both rather spoiled (or just snorkel snobs) because again, not too much was to be seen other than a barracuda and a couple of cuttle fish. Back to town to meet the guys for lunch at Waterfront Bistro, very nice place and food was delicious. A bit of shopping, a little relaxing and back to town for dinner at Ocean Grill, voted by all to be our favorite restaurant. Full of fine food and drink, we ended the evening on the villa's deck, enjoying the night sky.
Initially we had planned to rent a dinghy on Friday to hit some of the better snorkeling spots, including Waterlemon. However, on Thursday we had seen how rough the water was on the north shore and nixed that idea. As my arthritic knees could not handle the long hike to/from Waterlemon, we packed up the jeep and went to Caneel for the day. So glad we did! We saw turtles, a stingray and a spotted eagle ray in the sea grass just around the point. Had lunch at the beach restaurant and enjoyed the sand and sun. Dinner was at the Lime Inn, the perfect setting for our final island meal.
Saturday was the Walk of Woe, the early ferry to CA and a fantastic breakfast at Glady's Cafe. Arrived back home to snow and cold, wishing we could turn around and take the next flight back to St. John.
Thanks for reading!
