Okay...aside from the Oprah extravaganza...where would you retire...if you could retire? Seriously, within your financial boundries.

For us, we were all over the board, but have settled for Boulder,CO for many reasons. Culture, bike paths, environments, hospitals, airports, etc.

Hey, when you're reaching 60 and several friends have passed on...you think of these things.

Just curious who has thought about this and where they have made a decision on and why.

I honestly think I'm staying in Atlanta. The climate is perfect and it's near so much that I can drive to.

I prefer to visit beaches & mountains but at my current age I could definitely live in Whistler BC or perhaps Jackson Hole WY.

I'm thinking Fl,TX or AZ for 3 months of the year Would love it to be usvi but don't think I'll be able to swing that unless the power ball ticket hits tonight

I hear ya.  We love CO, but also love beaches.  We know that we cannot afford two properties, as we also own several rentals.  We don't want to be married to a cabin in the woods either.  Why do that when you can rent a cabin for a month or weeks and not have the upkeep.  It's a tough decision.

We live on a small lake just south of Madison and really like it here. The winter sucks, though. I suspect we will stay here, but go someplace warmer during the winter.

We have no clue where that "someplace warmer" will be. It's going to be fun exploring the options.

Costa Rica is supposedly the most up incoming recreational property in the world market. But I'm hesitant. Huge resorts have banked huge amount of money there. But with the economy, we're reluctant to invest there. There is rumor that a St. Regis is going up there...but haven't heard anything concrete yet.

our family has a house on an island in Maine, so for 4 months or so, that would be where i would like to hang out (say from June -september).

Presuming that the kids would be gone, we'd probably sell our house here and buy an apartment in the city. Ideally I'd like to take either Dec/Jan-Mar/Apr- and hang out somewhere in the south--st john would be great, but I am not sure that is feasible

Austin, TX...great city, great restaurants, great music, great weather...there's a pretty good university there, too.

Funny story...The defensive coordinator for UT, Will Muschamp, has been mentioned for several head caching positions. His wife ans family said go ahead and take a head job somewhere else, but we're not leaving Austin. You can go by yourself.

Bev - ditto. I'm afraid I'll be one of those old people committing suicide because I'm broke. Well, on the other hand, if I continue to drink and smoke it won't be an issue. Retire? doubt it

My husband and I (semi) retired to the Turks & Caicos Islands in 2005. It is an English-speaking country; their currency is the US Dollar and it's only an hour and a half flight to Miami.

We wanted to be near the ocean and we looked from the Outer Banks and south, down around the coast of Florida and along the Gulf as far as Corpus Christi. For the money, we could get so much more here and did.

We love it and now can't imagine living anywhere else.

We are probably 10 years or so away from retirement. We are thinking about splitting up our year between Denver where we live now, our property in Northwest Colorado which has great weather from Mid-May until Mid-October but has snowy and cold winters, and someplace warm in the winter for a month or two. We would probably rotate that winter getaway between many places and rent rather than buy.

I am a born and raised NY'er. No one in my family lives more than 40 miles from where the grandparents stepped off the boat. Last summer I traveled to San Diego with my husband for his 30th HS renuinon and I was hooked. So we are now on the 10 year plan to retire to San Diego. I've started to look at condo prices to see if it would be feasible to buy something now, rent it out for a while and then move when the time is right.
