A good turn repaid (local question)

First the story...On our last day on the island (July 5,08) as we were waiting for the ferry, my wife decided to mail her postcards from the post office. When we walked over there, the post office was closed and no stamps were available. This wonderful older woman happened to be in the post office and asked us if we needed some stamps. She proceeded to dig in her purse and when she couldn't find them she persisted for about 5 minutes looking and looking. Several times my wife thanked her and said that's okay, I'll just mail then when we get home. However, she kept saying now where did they go. I know I had a few. At last, she found them. We accepted them graciously and she would not allow any reimbursement. She wished us well on our trip home.

Somehow we felt like we had just run into an old friend. What a wonderful gesture and memory on our last day on the island. There was something about this woman that was so genuine and warm. She drove away in a Mercedes station wagon/SUV.

I told my wife when we get home, I was going to ask the forum if they knew who she could possibly be as I wanted to send her a bottle of maple syrup (being from New England.) Getting busy at work this never happened . Pia , your request for school supplies gave me the perfect opportunity to repay the good turn. Would anyone possibly know who she could be?

What a wonderful story and I wish I knew who it was - I'll be on the lookout for the SUV :)

I don't think we've had more than one Mercedes SUV on island, and I haven't seen it for quite a while; had the impression they were part-time residents. With the amount of driving I do, I can keep track of the one-of-a-kind cars pretty well.
When you say "older" do mean like 45, or like 80?

I will keep my eyes open for the Merc. Everyone seems to eventually go to where I work.

Pia,
I'm on the "sunny side of forty", personally, and I'm loving it.
