Like most crime on STJ my guess is that he was involved in something that he should not have been or it's a domestic violence issue.

Random violent crime rarely occurs on island.

Most all of the serious crime is drug related.

Just sayin...

I thought I remembered a drug releated issue with Cap's Place. From the Source:

Cap's Place has been in the news before. A St. Thomas man was arrested in December for burglarizing the bar. The bar was the scene of a June 2008 armed robbery. Additionally, 14 illegal immigrants and 11 bags of crack cocaine were found in a December 2007 raid.

As always a violent crime of any kind is tragic and I am sorry for his family's loss.

That news stinks.
I've personally never spent too much time at Caps',- just dipped in for a chilly one,or five,then continued moseying around town.
I never particularly felt as if it was some type of drug infested den, though.
Beats me; cheap cold beer, and relaxed island atmosphere.

Sad news after no murders on STJ in 2008.

A permanent solution to what I imagine was a temporary problem. It is too bad. Murder never looks good for tourists.

It's a fact of life anywhere.

What looks worse to tourists is when the local police drag their feet with their "investigation".

But thats one man's opinion

Ron -- My apologies. I tried to clarify my sympathies a bit better in my second post.

What I was trying to avoid was the inevitable discussion about how the islands are prone to random violence that usually ensues after an incident like this.

Since we have so may new people on the board I was trying to quell those fears and questions that inevitably follow.

Perhaps I could have better articulated my point.

At no time did I state that he was a drug dealer. I simply stated that "USUALLY" this is is a factor in the violent crime (minimal that it is) on island.

Am I wrong about this?

So what was the deal with the crack found and illegal immigrants found at Cap's place then as stated in the STJ Source?

Even if he wasn't directly involved that had to create some bad blood with someone, no?

STJ is a very small place that has it's benefits and its problems.

Again, my apologies if I came across as judgemental or harsh. I just don't wnat people thinking that this kind of thing is totally random. Because let's be honest -- 9 times out of 10 it is not.

Personally, I think there is a difference between choosing the right words, and relaying the correct sentiment. The post in question clearly "blamed the victim" for this crime. We think that is wrong, and we said so. You yourself, shoemak, should not feel that you cannot express an opinion if you feel something crosses the line. I think that post did.

Trust me, I hold my tongue enough on this board.

I am confused by the words of a few posts in this thread. I will just have to assume good intent. I am sad to hear of a life lost anywhere but especially in a place I like to imagine as a slice of paradise.
