We has this on Anguilla and Provo when renting normal, mid-range houses. I suspect the insurance laws/legal climate on those islands is quite different than in the US.

Hubby and I were viewing this thread and thinking it would be a great time, if funds were endless, to buy land and open up a car rental agency on STJ.

Does anyone know the history of this law and why it came into play in the first place..way back and also why it's rearing it's ugly head?

When we rented our jeep on STT, 7 yrs ago, we were never informed by the rental company (can't remember who it was...but it was a major company) of this law. We were never informed by the barge company and thank God, we weren't ticketed on STJ either.

I agree with whoever suggested that this is a lobbyist move. Someone is making a pocket full of cash off this "reminder" of a law that was never really enforced.

It will make people more afraid to rent on STT and take the chance.

I've contacted as many people listed as possible, I have signed the petition.

Grass roots campaign is needed to get this changed. People... we must step up here!

Sorry to those of you who are affected with upcoming trips.

"Hubby and I were viewing this thread and thinking it would be a great time, if funds were endless, to buy land and open up a car rental agency on STJ"

Unfortunately the number of rental cars allowed on St John and St Thomas are regulated - STJ has around 600 divided between all the rental agencies and I believe we are at our maximum limit so no more are allowed (so I have been told)

Hey, about owning a car rental agency on STJ...you know I was kidding, right? Thank you for thinking that we have the cash, but Wrong!

Hey, Pia's right, there are plenty of car rental sites on STJ...it's just good to plan ahead.

My understanding. All will be well tomorrow. Stay tuned.

I have been told that the whole thing will come to an end tomorrow as far as the 'new' law is concerned. I understand that legal counsel will look into the legality of it all. I also understand that more rental plates or quotas, will become available to STJ, so they can better fend off STT rentals, which I doubt as the prices are better in STT.

RL -- I absolutely respect your position in the community so I only ask in a bowing deference ---"I have been told that the whole thing will come to an end tomorrow as far as the 'new' law is concerned. I understand that legal council will look into the legality of it all."
I am guessing it is 'legal counsel" - as you state is is not a 'new' law - but pray tell, who says it will end tomorrow, which would be propitious of course and of great relief to many -better yet, do you know why the original letter compliance was issued?

Here you go! A little earlier than I presumed
