Here is a picture of the Kite bar - quality not the best - I think I took it while sitting in a moving bus...

Mike--thanks so much. It's not unlike what I remember. It doesn't look as magical as it was. I guess a lot of magic is felt rather than seen. Any guess as to the year?

So do you have other photos? I'd love to see them. I'm just awash with nostalgia right now.

Les - Here is a link to an old thread on this forum where some old pics were posted.. The pic of the Kite was probably '79 or '80. I know I have a few more 'somewhere' of places such as the Lobster Hut and Backyard that I hope to eventually find...

Lex,
I remember The Kite as being the best bar in the entire world too. Spent many a late night there before stumbling back to my campsite at Cinnamon Bay many many years ago. Great memories! I think the mystic of it has to do with the time of day as I remember it best (or don't remember it) at night. Thanks for stirring up a great memory!

For me nothing quite illustrates the changes I've seen on STJ better than the contrast between the Peter Bay of Victor Hall and The Kite and the Peter Bay of Kenny Chesney and the concrete monstrosities. There are times when I long for yesterday.

I agree Lex! There were changes, slowly at first, now with frightening rapidity around 2000. Sirenusa, Grand Bay condos and the Peter Bay gated communities symbolize what went wrong with the island. I agree these monuments to conspicuous consumption are totally out of step with St. John's style.
