Way overrated: Ms. Lucy's Full Moon Party. The food was expensive and awful. The meat was so tough. We had six in our party and not one meal was acceptable.

Sorry, one more "underrated"...the lobster crepes at the Balcony. Just sit at the bar and order these bad boys...pretty tasty.

On our recent visit to St John we discovered Rhumb Lines and found it fantastic! The food and service outstanding...also, The Inn at Tamarind Court is all around great value on island - try their restaurant too.

I do love this thread...

Most underrated:
Ronnie's Pizza. It is still open I hope!!! Wow, I'm from Chicago area & I just love their pizza. I loved it when it used to be part of the Rolling Pin Bakery. I love it even more now. You can buy little bottles of champagne or wine to go with it, or you can get a pretty decent salad bar to go with it. Allows you to eat cheap but decent on St. John. Also has games/books etc for the kiddies.

Lime Inn. As others have said, always consistently good service and absolutely great Caribbean Lobster & "all-you-can-eat-shrimp" Wednesdays.

La Tapa & Tage. Both great in my book. And yes, I've had world-class dinners at both.

Caneel. Stayed there for the 1st time last year. YES, it WAS pricey--so much so that I don't think we'll be staying there again. BUT, just in case we win the lottery, I would WANT to! Stayed on Scott's Beach. WOW, WOW, WOW. Sit on your private patio (or beach chair) a few feet from what has got to be the clearest water in the world. Walk on talcum-sand to get into warm beautiful water & see scads of sea turtles and all kinds of fish. Go back to get ready for dinner & relax again on patio reading while hubbie gets ready. See a deer jump right in front of me! Same thing at breakfast time, except they were 3 deer strolling in front of me. Also really enjoyed the Equator Restaurant. After 15+ years of visiting St. John had never eaten there; what a setting!

Pine Peace grocers. Consistently find a surprising selection with very good prices. A local feel but that's why I'm traveling; I love it.

I hate to mention my underrated beaches/snorkeling here because I don't want them all "discovered" or "rediscovered" as the case may be. But they are ALL within the National Park Boundaries which leads me to my list of overrated...

Overrated:

Sweet Plantains. I was so excited about finally trying them. It was an interesting night--good ambience, distinctive & tasty food. But I just felt we paid way too much for what we got.

Salt Pond & Lameshur. I'm an avid snorkeler & just do not at all find these 1/2 as exciting as the National Park beaches, either for their fish or their coral. Plus that walk back up Salt Pond--ugh. Plus the burrs on the beach at Lameshure & the rocky entry & the bugs (at least the last couple times we've been there).

Sunrise views. I'm built for the sunset--just my personal preference.

That's about it...

I'e had some pretty good bbq in my life and I thought Uncle Joes was fine, nothing special. Just like BBQ at any little town in Arkansas you might stop by and grab. It smells great and if you had a big day of cocktails and were starving, I can see where it wouldbe great.
Miss Lucys has slipped a bit! There was so much water on my plate from my crab cake benedict last trip that I was grossed out. I didnt eat very much. I still like Miss lucys and will send it back next time or get something else. I like lunch there though.
La Tapa is the most underrated to me. I love this place. I can't get enough. I also love the vibe at RhumbLines. I have never had a bad meal there.
Im just not into Skinny Legs. I have not eaten there and I dont want to either.
I still haven't tried Vie's garlic chicken and wont have a chance this next trip if they only serve it only Saturday.
I rarly hear anything good about Margarita Phil's. Maybe it will do for a Tex/mex fix! I had a bad lunch at the Balcony once. Maybe that was a fluke. It was like the chef had never seen the menu! It was the craziest meal we have had in STJ. Terrible. Others really dig this place and maybe we should have tried it at dinner time. I just don't know. Where in MG is SunDog? Is it that little bar in the back?

We have never tried Shipwreck Landig either. We go to Jolly Dogs every trip and eat at Miss Lucys when we are on this side of the island. Usually only go over there once on each trip.
I would like to try Aqua Bistro's brunch by cant seen to get any details aboaut it. I have 25 days until my trip. Would someone please go and let me know about their menu!!!!!! That is an order! Go to STJ right now and let me know.

SunDog is sooooooo good - very underrated - a must eat at place :D

It is located out side of Sea Leathers, the Cigar Store, Town and Country Real Estate in Mongoose Junction - you will see the green tables and umberella's and the Gecko Gazebo is the bar that is part of the same "Company"

I do! :D It's yummy! John and I really like this place. Get a table on the rail and watch the boats bobbing in the water while you eat. We've stayed at Secret Harbour twice, and ate almost all of our lunches and dinners there both times. The menu is probably different now, but I remember especially liking their tuna appetizer and their grilled fish specials.

Wonton ~

You gotta try Shipwrecks. Great food, awesome views, really nice and fun people. We say in Chocolate Hole and we drive over to that side at least once for lunch and twice for dinner. It's our first and last dinner on the Island. It's not a gourmet restaurant..just a place with great everthing!

I have to agree with Bug on Shipwreck. We have only been for lunch, but the food is consistent, and it just has that island feel we are looking for on STJ.

Miss Lucy's was a disappointment, although we have only tried it once. The view is awesome, but it was so hot the day we were there we ate inside. Service was slow and food just ok. We tried to go the day before and they were closed. Goats were EVERYWHERE! Inside and out.....sniffing on the tables, under the tables, you get the picture. My husband was a little turned off by that. It didn't really bother me. I love goats.

My must do for next trip is Sun Dog. I've heard so many good things about it and never been there except to get a drink. I heard it's very reasonable. I also always enjoy Delli Grotto. It is great for a picnic lunch.

I forgot about the Gazebo! We use it as our meeting point when shopping. The bartenders have always been great - upbeat and full of island chatter.

While we really like Miss Lucy's, we are literally overrun by goats the last time we ate there. A large, male goat would not leave us alone and actually jumped on to the table to steal our food. The hubs wrestled it off the table.

My hub laughed it off but our friend (other hub) was pissed and it really ruined his lunch.
