White Bay was fine on Tuesday. Its not perfectly flat when the North Swell is running. When we stayed with Gertrude in October 2004 the sailors who were moored at Ivan's camplained of rocking.... There was a big North Swell during that period.

thanks Rick for the info 'bout White bay.
was starting to get worried 'bout Ivans.
It was 2004 I think when we had so much damage to White Bay and the campground.

We were cruising on the NCL Jewel last week and had to leave St. Lucia an hour early on Thursday. We had a pretty rocky ride all the way until Saturday afternoon. During the night on Thursday, had swells running over 5 meters, declined slightly once we hit the deeper water past the VI's.

Lots of little white bags strategically placed at all of the elevators and bathrooms!

Back to reality today though. :-(

There was a story in this morning's Boston Globe that huge chunks of coral are washing up on the beaches in Barbados. They are anticipating some pretty significant reef damage. Hopefully that is not the case on St. John as well.

I don't get it!

Because of my schedule we HAVE to vacation in St. John in July - way off season. We know, of course, we are there during hurricane season but Thank Heaven it has never been a problem. In July the water is CALM AND WARM, beaches wide and beautiful. And the trade winds keep the heat and humidy down. I don't understand what the draw of HIGH SEASON is!! Big waves, no beaches, lots of people, higher prices...... Can someone explain?

Snorkelqueen - I just returned from 9 days on St John. The waves were large, some of the beaches were small (or even closed?)and the snorkeling was non existant for the first few days. However, it was warm, 78-84 degrees, and the sun came out (at some point) every day. I do prefer July for calm waters and better snorkeling, but this morning Rhode Island is cold, damp and GLOOMY. I love getting out of the Northeast when Mother Nature won't give up her hold on winter.
