As a veteran of two significant hurricanes (Hugo and Fran), I wish everyone in the islands the best. The storm passes quickly, the effects do not.

I love the islands and as much as it hurts me to see the damage, I have to remember that as a vacationer my "worries" are nothing compared to those who have significant resources invested in homes and businesses down there. We're due to visit at the end of September, and I hope to be able to contribute to St. John's economy at that time. As long as there is cold beer, power and a roof over my head, I'll be there!

Looks like they may have lost power at 10:18. That was the last image I saw for both St. John Brewers and Villa Serendipity.

Looks like Earl is up to a Cat 3. No posts from Island folk make me think that the power grid is down.

Praying like mad.

Villa Serendipity (Chocolate Hole) seems to still be updating.

Best of luck to everyone, this is one of the few times I can say I'm glad I'm not there.

BE SAFE all of you Islanders! We'll be monitoring from here and waiting to hear that you are all safely enjoying tropical concoctions when the storm breaks!

Where is Earl in relation to St. John? Has it passed, or is it still approaching?

Just watched an update on Earl....Cat. 3 now with winds of up to 120MPH. They are also watching a TD just behind Earl that they think may cause some major problems as well. PLEASE those of you on island...be safe. We are praying for all of you guys,

NHC is giving its highest odds for hurricane-force winds to Saint Maarten--a 99% chance. These odds are 4% for St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and 2% for San Juan, Puerto Rico. The main threat to Puerto Rico will be heavy rains--up to eight inches in isolated areas. Earl's rains, in addition to causing flooding and dangerous landslides, will also help alleviate drought conditions that have affected many of the islands this year.

Thinking of you all who are in the path of Earl.
