The "sharing shelf" at the RV resort where we are spending the summer had the book "The Dogs of Babel' by Carolyn Pakhurst. I remember it was quite popular when it came out but I thought it was a religious book so I didn't pick it up. Well for those of you who have read it you know it is far from religious. I really enjoyed it. Better late than never I guess!

[quote="PA Girl" I liked The Help well enough but the ending left me wanting more of a resolution. I guess I felt the ending wasn't as strong as the rest of the book.[/quote]

Agreed. It was a flat ending.

I love summer! Longer days means more time to read. Finished "Open House" by Elizabeth Berg.

I had the same thoughts on The Help. You expect a bigger ending since it's such a "big" story. It was a good book, though. Although some people in our book club really hated it.

We read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, too. It wasn't something I'd have picked for myself, but I must've liked it, because I bought The Girl Who Played with Fire (is that what's it called -- the one with the orange cover) the other day.

I was reading Shutter Island, but now the book club is reading "Black Dahlia." I'll have to track a copy down but I HATED the book and every "true crime" show I have watched on the topic. Part of me wants to sit this one out, but the whole point of joining the book club was to read things I wouldn't normally read.

I just finished Jodi Picoult's House Rules. I really liked the book but felt unsatisfied with the ending. I figured out what had happened so there was no surpirse at the end, but I was left wondering "well, how did that get resolved"?

I'm looking for a good read for vacation next week.

you know, i wonder why people have issues with the ending of 'the help'--(a few folks have posted that they have not liked the ending so this isn't to single you out lulu) I thought the ending was perfect. I certainly could have read more of that book, but i don't think it was necessary and might have actually harmed the narrative--i am certainly not an english scholar, but I thought the ending was fine--but i will miss the characters.

I loved "The Help"...after living 25 years in the South, I sometimes let myself believe that I'm a "Southerner" and I did that while I read the book. I think people who have lived down South may connect a bit more with the book. I read it while on St Thomas and the racial relationship aspect of the book permeated my thoughts of the history of the island...I pondered the relationships on the islands and how they might be different from Georgia, Alabama, or South Carolina. Anyway, I was fine with the end of the book but I was dissapointed that the book had ended. I really enjoyed the characters and was very interested in the subject matter. But, I only read about two books a year these days, so what do I know...
Cheers :)

I finished The Help and even though the ending was, well, not flat, but mellow, I still really, really liked it. The stories of the women weren't wrapped up with a nice bow but they all had new adventures and journeys to start by then end of the book. Maybe a Part 2 in store?

Maybe that's why it left me feeling unsettled? I do want to know what happens to the characters.

It was a good book, although a bit disturbing to me. Not that I didn't know it happened, I was just surprised. I couldn't put it down, though. So that's a good thing.

Finished The Passage. Real good. Govt expirement gone bad, virals, survivors surviving and journeying out into world of danger for answers. Good stuff.

Also read a quickie- My Horizontal Life, a Chelsea Handler book. Awesome sitting-in-the-sun read! Funny shorts about one night stands. Her others two books are now on my most wanted list.

Grommit,
I had the same reaction to this book and have not tried to finish it yet. I seem to recall others sharing this opinion. It would be good to know if it is worth trying again to read it.

After starting and giving up on three different books I did start and finish "Nights in Rodanthe" by Nicholas Sparks. There is a preview of his novel "The Wedding" in the back of this book and it looks pretty good. Anyone read it and want to offer an opinion?
