This is an interesting topic. Restaurants are hurting EVERYWHERE. We try to patronize mom and pop type places in our community but have cut back considerably on the number of nights we dine out in a month.

Do any of you have a cost per day rule of thumb for dining out on STJ? I know for our family of 4, we average $90-$150 with tip for a night out to dinner here. Breakfasts can run from $45-$70.

What can we expect for a range for a family of 4 if we stick with moderately priced restaurants for dinner and breakfast on STJ? (In general for dinner for the 4 of us, we order 1 appetizer, 4 entrees, 2 desserts, 2-4 kids drinks and 2-4 adult libations).

Just check my cc and dinner for 4 adults was 240 with tip that was I think 2 drinks per person 2 apps and 4 meals 3 were grilled tuna and one the snapper special.
That was at the lime inn. It might of been 3 drinks a piece.

And that's one place we are definately going to try! I figured it would be over 100 for 2.

I'm having a very hard time deciding how much to bring with me for 8 days 7 nights! I will NOT use credit cards as I cut them up long ago. If we foodshop and eat breakfast and/or lunch in our condo (or picnic basket) what do you expect we will need for dinners, tours (1 of the island, 1 sunset dinner cruise), and ferry's(plan on going to St. Johns alot)! Thanks!

(P.S. I was thinking 2,000 to be safe)

You could use the ATM's to get more if you need it my cc card is a debit so the money comes out of my checking account.

I would be weary about traveling with large amounts of cash. I don't find villa safes to be very secure, and if cash is stolen you’re screwed but credit cards offer a lot of protection because you won’t be out a bunch of money if a credit card gets stolen.

There was even a recent case of what appears to be theft of cash by a police officer on STJ:

And if you run out of cash or it gets lost or stolen the ATMs are infamous for being out of cash.

That is a lot of money to be walking around with. I agree with Waterguy about the debot/credit card thing, that way you don't have to worry about all that money.

Yeah your absoluately right! I wasn't thinking of that...I was more concerned if I'd have ENOUGH! I guess I can take 1/2 and put it in our MAC/Debt/Visa and bring half. Then split 1/2 between hubby and myself. I actually have some pretty cleaver hiding spots when I travel! But obviously can't tell...LOL!!!

It isn't hard to spend 100.00 dollars at starfish a couple of times a week if you are eating in. I brought rib eyes and pork chops for 8 people and a couple of extra chops for some friends on island. cheese and suasage for happy hour I was still under weight on the cooler. I still spent about 250 at the markets but then again I like to cook fancy when I'm entertaining. We ate out 3 dinners. Pia also told us where to get fresh fish that was out standing.
