Never had anything stolen from me while I was on STJ, but I just can't get comfortable leaving that kind of stuff unattended.

Wish I could just let it go.
Maybe you should purchase a locking bag with a strap that you could secure to a tree while you are snorkeling? I know I have seen bags like this before--they are fabric, but have a steel mesh lining, and the locking cord is also steel.

I love it when the beaches are almost empty but HATE it when other people invade my beach space and set up right next to us when the beach is nearly empty - drives me nuts!

I don't like the way everyone writes about St. John and not St. Thomas...makes me feel like a real outsider. I agree that STJ is beautiful but so is STT. Just my 2cents.

I second that emotion. Love STT too...that was our plan for 2011, but it has been put on the back burner due to vaca schedules at work, kids school and the $$$ it takes to fly to paradise!

Let's solve the problem. Please start sharing about STT on this forum. Megan's is beautiful, so share about your love for it. Attach pictures, etc. For me, STT has been bypassed because I'm focused on getting to STJ. Your writings will be good for all of us. I'll follow them for sure. Now just go do it. :D

I do not care for STT as a vacation destination so I have nothing to write about. If you like it, talk about it. Connie talks about it quite a bit and there are a few posters that talk about STX, well.

If you want more STT chatter, you have to create it.

Waiting for STJ junkies to talk about STT is not likely to happen.

Ditto on that one...we rented a house this last trip...scorpion, deadly creepers (long black things everywhere) and other critters. Oh and it was a nice house...However, we have never run into the large bugs at the Westin in the timeshares or the hotel rooms.
Dislike the mosquitos as they love us.
Dislike Skinny legs bathrooms too as DH won't go back due to that reason.
Dislike the cost which is fairly high also.
Dislike the time spent traveling as it is Usually an overnight on the trip down and way back home. Due to the last two reasons I'll add my last...
Truly Hate the fact that it looks like we won't be back in 2011...so I'll keep my old ticker up until I can plan one in for 2012.
I'll add the no-seeums to the list, having to leave the beach early cause of them!.
Being on "alert" all the time in the house for bugs of any kind, esp. ants,am a compusive neat freak but having to be on guard for ants due to the least little crumb, was annoying.
Being polite to everyone we met, tourists & St Johnians alike, in restaurants, stores, ferry dock etc, like was advised here on VIOL, only to be treated 90% of the time rudely & cooly. Even at some of the places that are supposedly the friendliest places. Gave a warm greeting & smile every time. w/ no reciprocation. Ms Vies was the only place we were really treated friendly & had people talk to us when we spoke to them.
Sorry to all you STJ lovers, no offense meant. Just one couples experience.
Was not a good 1st time experience,sadly.

St. John isn't for everyone; that's good, because it's not a very big island.

As for St. Thomas and St. Croix, I would love for people to talk about them more often. I would probably like to go to both places, but really I don't know anything about them. Connie and a few others do share their experiences, which I appreciate greatly.

I don't know enough about St. Thomas to talk about it, so I highly encourage those of you who do to share with us. Don't feel like an outsider. Just post. There's not some secret St. John club here. And just because we may not reply (once again, it goes back to feeling like you have no knowledge and nothing to contribute), doesn't mean we're not taking it all in...

Liamsaunt, great idea...hadn't seen the locking bag before, but I'm guessing it works like a bicycle lock. Like you said, it wouldn't be full-proof, but it would give me a lot more peace of mind while I'm out snorkeling.

Although we live in one of the most self-important, rude cities in the country (DC,) I can think of no place in America where more locals are more hostile, officious, or unpleasant with visitors, from the local police to the ferry ticket sellers to most of the Starfish cashiers. As reflected by your comments most visitors are laid-back and mellow, and try hard to be good guests, but to be constantly confronted with surly resentful hostile locals can be wearing. Many visitors note that the BVI are a pleasant contrast, because of the warm attitude of the locals, and many VI residents we spoken with have expressed the same view.
DC is equally overrun with visitors and foreigners, as are New York, NOLA, and Hawaii, (and even Paris for heaven's sake) but I've never experienced in any of those places the vibe we often get in STJ. Nevertheless, we keep coming back (soon for our seventh trip) because Kauai is too darn far. Our son much prefers St Martin though precisely because of the locals, but since we treat, we come for the villas and the National Park beaces.

I was a visitor in DC just 2 weeks before coming to St. John. I encountered a lack of love for my presence more in DC than here, but I have encountered some on the island who seem less than thrilled about life in general. I don't take it personal as I am having a good time with or without them. That being said, I will visit both again.

I just can't stand the snow. The roads are so tight down there that it is hard to get by the plows. You would think they would do a better job shoveling the steps of St. John Spice, like someone is going to get hurt wicked bad......

Seriously?

The only thing I can think of is the people that cannot adjust to island time and really don't know how to just chillax.

Cat is out of the bag. I have to agree. I do not appreciate some of the rudeness we experience, despite our efforts to be nice.

Mike, that's not snow on Ruth's steps. It's chicken crap.
