One reason I love St John is that you can wear your bathing suit and/or shirts all day and night. No need to bring fancy clothes for evening wear. for snorkeling, I have the mini fins that fit in my carryon (they work fairly well).
Since I always need to change planes (live in Syracuse, NY), any time saved by not having to wait for baggage is welcome.

Lotions and potions have me puzzled as to whether I want to ship down or check a bag. We don't have a direct flight, which I know increases the chance of lost luggage.
Hair stuff, sunscreen, bug spray, good smellin' stuff, etc...what is the quality and availability on STJ? And I'm guessing expensive?
We're going to be down there for 17 days, so the travel sizes that are available aren't big enough for us.

BeachKitten- I just brought all my girly stuff and filled the bags that would've been used by my husband and boys. I have some products I can't do without and I knew I'd never find them on island or if I did, they'd be very expensive.
The only things I had to buy were sunscreen and body lotion. Hawaiin Tropic had a great smelling moisturizer quality moisturizer for under $10. Same goes for sunblock. I didn't pay more than $12 a bottle for the good stuff.

For 17 days, I would ship a box of toiletries, pack a carry on, and do some laundry on island

It saves time at the airport. Once you land on STT you are on serious island time...frankly I prefer spending EVERY second on STJ, NOT waiting at the airport for my luggage..PLUS I have had my luggage lost too many times...We are in our bathing suits more then anything while we're there...however...I want MY things with me. If you've ever had lost luggage its a pain and an inconvenience. I think its just a matter of preference.

So now I understand why, when we tried carry on only to STT the last two times, that I couldn't get my duffle bag in the overhead!!!
Come on people, carry on is getting crazy on airlines.
Sometimes I just can't believe how many bag people will try to bring on a flight with them.
Also, people who may be in seat 25 are putting their bags in ailes close to the exit, so THEY can have a fast exit.
I just think the carry on situtation is getting out of control.

The airline have created this by charging for luggage. It is not the passenger's fault, they are just trying to make it economical.
I have been a carry on traveler for awhile. I just don't need that much when I am on vacation. I don't care what my hair looks like and make up is never worn when on STJ or for that matter most any place I vacation.
When you lose an entire suitcase of all your essentials, you learn to pack less and keep it with you.

I TOTALLY agree with you island girl...HOW can luggage get lost when you're on a NON STOP flight???? THEY have forced people to re-think air travel. I bring one carry on bag and a large purse that fits under the seat in front of me...if I'm annoying someone, oh well...I paid a lot of money for that ticket, so if I choose to carry on my luggage so be it...

We did lose our bags, or basically they were stolen on a direct flight from Philly to Fort Lauderdale. We NEVER got them back, so we lost everything and spent quite alot of time in the Keys trying to replace cloths, toilets, etc. Try to find a bathing suit when you're on vacation. Especially for women.
I just don't know how people do just carry on. I really think that I pack pretty good, but those flippers, even the short ones, the vests, mask, snorkel gear takes up alot of room. I don't want to rent that when I get on Island...I want ours. Paid alot of money for the gear, so it's definetly coming.
I don't bring alot of clothes and I bring every toiletry I have in the sample sizes.
I don't bring jewelry or fancy shoes.
I think of everything when I start packing. About whether I REALLY need it and if I don't it comes out.
I still don't know how everybody does it.

On the way down we carry on only mostly due to wife's fear of lost baggage not showing up until halfway through the trip or worse... On the way back I will usually check a big bag just to lighten the load and don't really care when it shows up at my home airport.
Of course that changes if I have boarding passes already printed and there is a big line at check in...
