I started on TA, and someone there posted a link to this forum, which is ever so much more fun.

I'm using TA for a trip to Kauai :D -- our first one, but not until December :( . Tried going back to STJ, but wanted to use miles and couldn't get it done. Sea-nile, what part of Kauai are you staying in?

I would love to find a board like this for Hawaii and other destinations. I notice that emotions on TA tend to run high, and many threads seem to digress into posts about locals vs. tourists. I posted what I thought was an innocent question about the best books for Kauai, and it became this emotional discussion about books leading people onto private property. I posted once saying I had enough info, trying to get people to stop replying; people kept up the online argument until TA shut down the thread. Yikes!

One thing that's great about this forum (besides the people, which make the difference), is the ability to post pictures. I don't think you can do that with TA, and it makes a huge difference when reading trip reports.

Thanks for the Kauai forum, Mia.

Chicagoans,
We are staying on the North shore (Haena) about as far north as you can get to the NaPali coast. We can walk to Tunnels beach. I'll let you know how it is.
Where are you staying? I think the South and East are better for winter.

Hi Sea-nile: We are staying at Kiahuna Plantation on the south shore. I had originally planned on staying north, until I saw the surf conditions on this site: http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/guides/bea ... trends.php Huge difference summer to winter!

I'm very excited (even though it's a long way off.) Hiking, tubing, beach time...
