My name is Jay and I am a drinker.
I am so sorry that you are sad for me. I own and run a small company and my wife is an IT manager. We both work hard and play hard it just comes with the territory. That said I haven't seen a huge number of drinking related threads started here. I can say if you have never set on the beach at White's Bay on Jost with a painkiller or a cold carib, or on the back of a sailboat at Anegada watching a rainbow after sailing through a squall and enjoying a cocktail, or had dinner at Sunset on the deck of the Mafolie in Charlotte Amalia, with a nice glass of wine then, or for that matter in Tage with eighteen people a tab the size of GNP of several carribean countries and two tables full of empty plates and wine bottles, I truly feel sad for you. Do you have to drink to enjoy the islands? No you don't. If it was just about the drinking I could set in my Tiki Bar out back and get loaded looking at the river and playing Bob Marley and Buffett on the stereo. Plus if it was just about the drinking I wouldn't need all that dive gear or the extra money it cost to spend a bunch of time messing about on boats. I hope your future posts are a little more constructive, although this one has been fun to watch.

I think most of us on this site are in our 40's, i'm knocking a little to hard on the big 50 myself. and i think for the most part that our hard partying days are long behind us. a few weeks ago the weather here was in the 70's, so i bought a 12 pack, cranked the speakers up loud outside (i live way out in the country)and planned on cooking a steak on the grill. well i drank 3 beers and fell asleep on the couch.

Holy Crap ~ what is happening here this morning? I love everyone. My husband says I love everyone even more when I drink. I must need a drink really bad......30 minutes later......I love you Mel See what the power of a drink can do!

I am pretty new to posting but have read a fair amount.
St. John was my home for 2 years until my mom got really sick and so I am stateside til I can get back.
Mel, regarding the drinking I think it just is a way of life for so many locals that when someone comes on vac they just feel a kinship and like the bars.
You can have ice tea in any one of our bars.
We have live music, friendly people and it is just part of the environment.
I notice people on the board talking about their favorite drink but how is that different then talking about your favorite restaurant on island.
I have plenty of friends on island that fequent Quiet Mon and the Beach Bar and Skinny's and they may have a beer or something else but they not obsessed with it....
I think most people on this board go to the islands for release and fun and drinking is part of that........

I'm 54 and Mrs. JT is 60 and we ain't slowed down too much, much less left our partying days long behind us.I guess this will lend validation to Mel and Tortola, but the last time we were in Coral Bay, my carpenter friend said at the end of two weeks that it was time for us to go, as his liver couldn't take much more of me. By me helping him out for a couple of days, he did take a rare day off work and went to the beach.

I think if Mel stayed a week at the VILLA BEACH BAR she will come over to the dark side.
