Obviously everyone is different in their cash management techniques and in their comfort zones with cash finances when traveling.
This was a good and informative discussion and probably made some people examine more closely the options available to them.

Like the time I was on vacation and my car was broken into. I had traveler's checks and was able to go to the bank and get my money. If I had been relying on my ATM card, it would have been of no use because I no longer had it...thief guy did.
You need to start hiding your ATM card in the same place you hide your travelers checks.
Peace.

Maybe you don't know how they work. You get the actual checks and also receipts for the checks. You carry the checks with you, like you would cash, but keep the receipts locked in your safe or wherever. So, if the checks are stolen, you simply take your receipts to a bank and you get your money.
In that way, they are unlike an ATM card. If you are carrying your ATM card with you, as most people do, once it is stolen, it is gone. Sure, you can get another when you get home, but what do you do in the meantime if you need cash?
It works for us. Doesn't mean that we are stuck in the stone age, which we are not. It just means that it works for us.
Peace

By the way, I think the merits of traveler's checks is a stupid thing to have spent so much time on.
By, by the way, I, too, like your photos.

Islandgal...we have never used travelers checks on STJ...as has been said, we bring some cash and cards...one of which is a ATM card. Always have been in great shape! Never a problem.

Earlier in my life I always used TC, definitely if I was leaving the U.S. They were really the best option. But I haven't used them for years. I stopped using them after returning from a couple of vacations in which I brought them, but never used any. I stopped using them, so stopped buying them and haven't found myself missing them.
