Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's so hard to lose a pet and I know they are just like a family member. 15 years is a long time. He looks so beautiful and he was so lucky to be living with you for so long.

I'm very sorry Tracy. I know you will miss him this Christmas. He was lucky to have you and vice versa.

Tracy, I am so very sorry for your loss. It's so heartbreaking when one of our little guys heads to the bridge:
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry Tracy.
Hang in there long enough for the hurt to subside enough to be overshadowed by the joy he brought to your life (and you to his).

I am so very sorry. I have read and re-read the poem Rainbow Bridge (which has already been published here) when I lost one of my 4 babies. It has always helped. In addition, the last line of this poem has always given me some comfort and I hope that it might possibly be of some help to you too:
A Dog's Plea
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend for no heart in all this world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail, when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory than to have the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with water for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And my friend, when I am old and no longer enjoy good health and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going, I am not having fun.
Please see that my trusting life is taken gently.
I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

I'm so sorry and know what you are going through. We lost our beloved yorkie five months ago. I can't seem to let go.
My wonderful 97 yr old father-in-law is not expected to last through tonight, and we are coping with that loss fairly well. He wasn't much of a pet person, but he always loved our Phoebe who liked to sleep on his foot. He would always tell her what a "fine dog" she was. All 3 1/2 pounds of her.
You will always treasure your memories of George.

I'm so sorry Tracy and all the others that I have lost their pets recently.
My pup is as much of a member of the family as any human, and I can't imagine losing him. You were fortunate to have that sweatheart for 15 years and I hope the memories of that time will eventually bring you comfort.

Thanks everyone - your kind words mean so much and those two poems left me with tears rolling down my face - they were perfect.
George was a good old soul and such a great friend. Although he was deaf for the last few years, I always told everyone that out of my four boys (3 being human) he was the one that listened to me the best. And, it was true.
To those of you who have lost a loved one (human or animal) or may soon (verjoy) may you also know the kindness of those like I did today.
And no, Pete, I will not take Butkus. Unless you change his name to something more Packer friendly......
