I don't see the issue as being between reclining or not reclining. I see it as a matter of courtesy. If you ask before you recline, at least you give the person behind you the chance to close their laptop before it gets snapped in half. Or what if you suddenly throw your seat into full recline and the person behind you is reaching under the seat for a carry-on item?

Common courtesy seems to have disappeared when it comes to air travel. All of us are trying to be as comfortable as possible in the limited space provided by the airlines. A little cooperation amongst us would go a long way. If I asked you to recline only half way, what would be your response?

I don't have a problem with the reclining during the flight but the fact that if there was a problem during take off or landing it would have made it more difficult for my 3yr old and myself to get out of the seats. I think that is the point of having the seat in the upright position.
Speaking of rude... On the way down to PC. The woman in front of us was letting her kid play with playdoh and he got it everywhere. Everytime the flight attendant would go by and he'd bend over and pick it up and she just ignored the whole thing. STUPID!!!!

I must confess, I'm a seat recliner. I don't slam it back into the person behind me, but they know as well as I do that the seat reclines.
As for people holding up takeoff or not following instructions, that is very inconsiderate.

I have to admit, I'm a seat recliner too. I never forget a trip from Spain with a plane where it wasn't possible, and I had to sit right up all the time. I got really problems with my back. But if someone asks me politely to change position, I do it. And of course if it's a long flight, I think it's absolutely necessary to be able to recline the seat.

I'll recline too, but never all the way, esp with a tall person behind me, and not without a glance back and doing it slowly.

I'm 6' and I don't recline my seat at all unless it's a red eye and even then just a bit or flights when there's no one behind me. I can't afford to fly first class-(if I won the lottery that would be my dream ). My knees on many flights are touching the seat ahead of me -when they drop that seat back it's a royal pain. And for whatever reason it always seems to be people who don't need the extra room.... It's most aggravating when you have a drink on your tray table that goes sloshing around because they push the seat back so fast. I realize that the airplanes are built to allow it, I just think people should be a little more considerate of others.

Is it even possible to recline an airplane seat rapidly? Every one I've ever been on has a button that sticks, and then when you can move the seat, it's like cutting through quicksand to get the seat back a couple of inches. Just because I recline doesn't mean I do so rudely.

PS - I personally don't recline the full amount unless it's an overnight flight and everyone seems to be reclining. But yes, if someone asked me to only recline 1/2 way, I'd probably oblige. Again, depending on the circumstances.

There are only a few airplane layouts where reclining is a big problem for my 6' 200 lb. frame.

I generally have bigger problems with people that are so wide that they hang over my seat. My personal nightmare includes the phrases "two seatbelt extenders" and "I'll have to put the arm rest up in order to sit down." I like Southwest's solution to this problem; they actually allow you to get two seats for the price of one if you cannot fit into a single seat - http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/ ... lines.html

Marsh and I like to watch movies on the laptop. We're trying to chill, too. And, there often are cocktails involved, which tend to go everywhere on recline.

I understand putting the seat back a bit, but the full way is a bit much. Just because you can do something doesn't mean that it is the right thing. I suppose I have the right to play the "Wipeout" drum solo on my tray table. It is "my" tray table after all. But, that could be a tad annoying to the person in front of me...dontcha think?

All I can ask is that you recline responsibly. (I would put one of those smiley things here to let you know that I'm kidding but: 1)I don't know how to and; 2) men don't use smiley faces.)

This thread brings to mind the passion of the political threads...okay, not so much, but kind of.

I like to think that I am a considerate person, but it never occured to me to let the person behind me know that I would be reclining and if it would be ok with them. I am embarassed.
I guess I need to think about that the next time I fly.
