with kids --and depending on their interests....
the refurbished intrepid museum--
Ellis Island (way, way better than the statue--really an amazing place--and you buzz the statue on the way out--go early!!!)
if you just want to get a closer look at the statue --and like a boat ride, then just take the Staten Island Ferry for a round trip...free!
walk down canal and bargain for tchokes in china town--

times square, simply because it is neon in all it's glory--
a show....my kids LOVED 'Wicked' (as did we)--there is a revival of 'south pacific' that is wonderful
if you don't have a decent zoo where you live the Bronx Zoo is a great way to spend the day and easily accessible by public transport (and the transport is safe and fine!)
we have museums galore--but the Modern after it's facelift is really worth a turn--and Friday evenings are free (a big savings)
for boys: the armor and weapon room at the Met --and for all the egyptian temples--if you have more love of Egypt the Brooklyn museum is the place to be.
if you are here in June, the first to second week...and love gardens, then the Rose gardens at the brooklyn botanical garden should be in full swing.
Central park.....hands down....spend a spring sunday there and you will see amazing music, dance, art, etc --and polar bears.....if you are here at christmas...well then the bronx botanical garden has a major train thing happening and there's rockefeller center and skating in the park and shopping at FAO....

These are the more obvious things.....and we've barely scratched the surface!
