If you love the Virgin Islands and can't continue to afford STJ, you should really give ST Croix a try.
Friendly, laid back, easy to get to and a good bargain; we started going there a few years ago and wouldn't change now for anything.

hi, have you considered vieques? it is one of the "spanish virgin islands" i cannot speak with authority, but all that have been there say it is indeed gorgeous and in the off season especially affordable. since the naval base closed years ago, much of the island has been turned in to park land, so there are some lovely beaches.
We are going there on thursday and i would be hapy to let you now what we thought of Vieques. We are huge StJ fans as well--having been travelling ther since the mid 80's (and we are lucky enough due to FF miles and all to be going back for christmas)
but we are also thinking that Vieques might be an interesting place to explore
