You can get out of the car on the ride, there are usually upper decks which provide nice views. Shopping and a snack at Duffy's may take longer than you think, so plan accordingly.
The car ferry times are listed here. From what I've heard, they're about as reliable as anything else on island time.
I always just call the villa people the minute I get on the ferry, and they know a lot better than I do what time I will arrive!
