Check out Floridays Resort Orlando. My husband stayed there last year on a golf trip and said it was gorgeous. We looked into it for a family trip at one point and I remember it being reasonably priced as well. He said the pool area was quite nice. It might fit your bill.

The Gaylord Palms Resort is a really neat place. It is normally expensive to stay there, but there are specials available from time to time. Even if you don't stay there, it's worth a visit just to walk through the indoor gardens.

2nd this one. They had a fire a few months back that sent everyone running out into the parking lot in the middle of the night. Not sure if this made the place worse or better. Not going to venture back to find out!

We used to stay at a place in Lake Buena Vista about a five minute drive from Downtown Disney, that is listed as a bed and breakfast, but in fact is like a small, upscale motel on a large tract of land.
We liked it because we were close enough to be in the action in short order if we desired, but we could also get away and let the little ones (and me!) nap, take a relaxing swim, etc.
Before the boys were old enough to warrant staying on Disney property we always stayed there - even if it was just Leslie and I going to Orlando for the weekend.
Here's their web site in case you'd like to check them out:

I appreciate everyone's suggestions.
Augie - you may have completely changed my idea about a resort. Hubs loves birds and would probably enjoy the location. Looks like an interesting place, very similar to where we just stayed in TCI.

We stayed at a couple different condos in the attached location and liked it for value and convenience. They are about 5 miles off Disney property and we were getting a 3 BR condo with Kitchen for ~ $99/night. It was handy with the kids and we cooked almost all of our own meals as well. There is a big pool with a slide too...worked well for us a couple years and we will probably go back.It is a gated community in a convenient location.
We just won't shell out the cash to do the Disney resorts, so it was a good alternative for us.
