Marking his territory maybe...whatever.

I like the look of that beach, real open...

Snorkeling about ten yards offshore of the east side of the remains of the old dock, you can see the coral encrusted fluke of a very large and very old anchor protruding from the sand.

Funny Wanda- The two times that I've been to Denis, there has been a naked woman on the beach. Once we literally almost ran into her while snorkeling. Neither of us were paying attention and when we both noticed each other, she got freaked out and swam away very quickly...like a Scared Nekid JayBird!

Does anyone know who lives at that property. I understand the property around it is now controlled by the National Park, but that remaing interests still have use of the living quarters there. I know Melanie Griffith used to live there with her family growing up (as caretakers). Just curious what family has it now. Sorry if it seems too nosey. There's just been some false reports about its ownership that I know are untrue.

Sorry. Melanie Griffith never lived here...her father and half-siblings did, but Melanie was already a starlet by then, and had been living with her mom, Tippi Hendron (sp.?) in L.A. Melanie did vacation here a couple of times as a kid, they usually rented the Oppenheimer house.
The current owner of the retained part of Denis Bay is a NY hedge-fund trader, but he doesn't live there. The caretaker in residence is a low-key artist type.

Thanks Hugo for that information. I'd wondered about the accuracy of The ST. John Beach Guide by Gerald Singer which states that Melanie "spent much of her childhood" at the Denis Beach Estate. I was also curious about the comment in the book that "Ed Fine, son of the Three Stooges actor Larry Fine bought remainder interest in the 1990's, but that those rights were resold." I couldn't find any reference that Larry had a son named Ed. According to most biographies about Larry, he had one daughter and one son, Johnny, who died in an accident. I'm not criticizing the St. John Beach Guide, but that part on the history of Denis Beach has puzzled me.

It looks like you have 2 locations for the old anchor.East and West! I snorkeled there last July and thought it was to the left of the old dock{when your facing out toward the water}The reef as I remember wasn't "grand",but it was fun to explore!Parafins.

Well, TropicAtHeart, we here on St. John have no problem with criticism of the Beach Guide, although SJ Off The Beaten Track is the one we really don't like. Having said that, Ed Fine TOLD everyone he was descended from a Stooge, and he was certainly unusual, shall we say. Maybe no one here ever checked....
