Here's my story about dress code on St. John. We aren't people who need to dress up at all but....We'd spend an entire 12 hours on Maho one day. Decided we were tired and gritty from sand and didn't want to go home to shower. We parked our group at Woody's and headed to Cafe Roma to place a carry out order. My friend who hadn't been there before mentioned she'd like to come back and eat in the restaurant before our trip was done. The staff overheard and said, "why don't you want to eat here tonight?" We replied because of our appearance. He immediately said, you look fine...this is St. John. We ate there in the middle of the restaurant and enjoyed a wonderful meal and great service all while being completely comfortable in our flip flops and clothes over swimsuits. Everyone around us came in dressed up. When we left we made conversation with the large group next to us and apologized for our dress since they were dressed so nicely. They replied, "We are just all wishing we were dressed like you!" Yes, it's definiteyl a casual place!

We had our final planning party on Saturday. The newbie husband asked, "so, should I take jackets for dinner?"
Ah, that would be a no.
While absolutely delighted, he just can't get over the fact that it will be so casual.

One night we dressed up (and by dressed up I mean nice sundresses and leather flip-flops) and went out to dinner.
Other than that, every night (except our travel day, which we wore our travel clothes) we ate dinner in clothes thrown over our swimsuits. Not that we stayed that far out, it's just easier to stop on your way home. Happy hour turns into dinnertime really quickly on St. John.
As long as you don't wear swimsuits uncovered in public, they don't really care what you wear.

I think I am the only person who's ever been to St. John who doesn't have the famous Woody's t-shirt that says: Happy Hour is the reason I get up every afternoon. (I think that's what it says, anyhow.)
Oh, St. John, it's the life.

I don't have one lulu and I lived on island........In fact I do not even have a coozie from woody's........just memories.........lol
As long as you cover up and do not walk around in your swim trunks or bikini and no shirt or sundress you are fine.
places like la tapa and zozo's people seem more dressed.........

I've heard this on this forum and now, after just one trip to STJ, I am a firm believer in: "take half the clothes and twice the money."
No dressy-ish clothes for us this trip (and I am a serious clothes horse!) Last time, those clothes never left my suitcase. I went to all dinner each night in shorts, shirt, and the same flip flops I had worn all day at the beach. What a relief not to have to bring dressy clothes. My suitcase will be consideribly lighter this time.

We bring shorts, Tevas and a couple of Hawaiian shirts. No problem.

Now augie, this is the islands. If you feel the need to be all bound up go right ahead. Lets just say that we pack less every trip and still bring clothes home unworn.

You are all so funny...I was just having this conversation with my friend...he has visited St. John about 10 times and he was just saying how casual it is...I can't wait to be on St John wearing my flip flops, sipping a cool drink and having every happy hour turn into dinnertime...Especially after the 14 degree day we just had!

I'm glad this topic was brought up, as i ALWAYS overpack and have decided to bring more bathing suits and less "go out at night" clothes this time...
Can 2/23 be here any sooner!??!?! It's cold here!

Afer a couple of trips to STJ, we have learned to pack light because we always bring a small container of laundry detergent to rinse swim suits - even if we stay in a place that has no washer/dryer. We end up washing our favorite shorts and t-shirts, too, wearing the same clothes several times while we are there. It always dries quickly hanging over a chair on the patio.
