Hey Dave-a-roni I don't know if this helps or makes things more confusing but I did a search to see where Gilligan's Island opener was filmed and this is what I got http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-3743.html

I was on a cruise in the mid 80's to the Bahamas and went to the island Gilligans Island was filmed on. It was called Salt Cay. It was a gorgeous place and started a love for clear water, sand and now my beloved St John.

The season 1 DVD "special features" does indeed state it is Coconut Island. I've seen it, just off of Kaneohe Bay on Oahu, and it does seem to fit the general dimensions. Of course, this is just for the opening and closing credits. The majority was filmed in a studio

They also mentioned Salt Cay. If you read the blog it's just like ours ... lots of back and forth of "I heard this, I heard that place" But Hawaii sounds like it (other than the set! )

Very interesting thread non the less, a lot of mystery.
