I love Dunkin' Donuts, but only get actual donuts for road trips - Boston Creme and Old Fashioned are my favorites.
I'm not a big MacDonalds person, but always stopped for a Big Mac on the way to Don's parents in northern New York; however, he found a shortcut (6 hrs vs 7.5 hrs) that doesn't pass a MacD's, so it's been awhile since my last Big Mac fix.
And no, I don't think it's weird at all.

When I used to drive to my parents' house all the time, I would get a diet red mountain dew (do they even make that anymore?), trail mix and beef jerky. EVERY time.

It is fascinating to see that other people have go to foods on the road. One friend who I know WAY to well now after a 9 hour roundtrip roadtrip through Texas has the go to food of combos.
I think there are certain foods that you can only find in gas station stores ... corn nuts for example.

For the car: Atomic Fireballs are a must and a can of mixed nuts and a bag of frito's or cheetos.

For road trips it's jerky (preferably home made, but if I have to buy it i buy Jack Links brand. I have a buddy who works for them) and Diet Dr. Pepper. I never drink Diet Dr. Pepper at home, but I always grab one on the road.
For the plane I usually grab a bag of trail mix.

Ok, stupid question. I thought you could only bring food bought in the airport on the plane?? I know you can't bring liquids & I guess I assumed I couldn't bring food. Hubby is in CA & was in the last row for a 7 hour trip. They ran out of food to buy by the time they got to the last row!!!! 5 hours, no food. We are traveling in 2 weeks & would love to pack my own food for the plane trip & not buy the overly expensive airport food..but thought it was not allowed.
Flip Flop - car trips - Sun Chips, dairy queen stop on our way back from Richmond, BoJangles chicken whenever I can find one & charleston chews. Never eat that stuff normally. Somehow I feel I deserve the treats for enduring the trip. Very logical don't you think?

Beef Jerky (the giant industrial sized bag) and a big bag of Skittles. I eat them both in their entirety and then I am completely dehydrated and my jaw is so stiff I can't open my mouth for the rest of the day (which many consider a blessing.....).

Cocosmom, you can bring your own. I tend to the prepacked and sealed stuff but have been known to pack ziplocks of snacks for the kids - goldfish, pretzels, M&Ms (very useful in bribery), etc.
No one has ever said a peep about it. They did make me toss my coffee once but that was LONG ago before the new liquid ban even - flying out of National Airport always seems to add different levels of ridiculousness.

Road trip on my own? I bring water and peppermint gum and stop for Dunkin donuts coffee and Popeyes chicken..mmmmm
Road trip with Chip? We pack a cooler with sandwiches, water, sun chips, peppermint gum, and granola bars. He hates to stop

I do pretend that I have to pee so I can stop and get coffee
I always pack granola bars, peppermint gum, and chips for plane rides, although we are thinking about a log weekend to Vegas in January and I am packing sandwiches and tons of snacks.
Can you tell that I like peppermint gum?

Too funny! Me too
For some reason my husband loves to have beef jerky whenever we travel - I'll never understand...

Fruit, nuts, seeds, and raw cheese and a little red wine on the plane. Then when I get to my destination-Beer and Buffalo wings(my weakness).

Definitely the industrial sized bag of beef jerky or "nuggets". Also pizza Combos and Pringles because of the can. These seem to have become the airplane staples. We really don't eat these items much otherwise. I too don't fret much about what I eat on vacation within reason. We usually get the standard yucky airport premade sandwich to stave off the hungers.

Travel day weaknesses:
~ McDonalds, I have no idea why. It's just like Pavlov's dogs...travel day equals McDonalds. I get hungry for it as soon as we hit the road for the drive to the airport (usually a couple of hour drive) or, on the way home from the trip.
~ On the plane? Big craving but bad idea: Snack mix. You know the stuff. It's got those yummy garlic chips and pretzels and stuff. Not, NOT, good for your breath when you are sitting sooooooo close to someone. You might as well take your shoes off and stick them in your lover's face. (Pete, don't even start in on the stink of the pumpkin seeds I made last weekend; at least it wasn't a travel day)
~ Cocktails. Bad idea but can't help it. Again, Pavlov comes to mind. I'm traveling, I am on vacation equals, I can drink anytime I want.
By the time we arrive at our destination, I am probably dangerously dehidrated from the salt and liquor but, who cares? I'm on vacation.
Someone mentioned Cheez-Nips. Scary. I'm completely burned out on them this week. I've been out of town on work and that has been my snack...when the conference feeds you dinner at 5:00 pm, one has to have something to enjoy later and that is what I brought with me. I can't even look at them now. I did venture out to the local gas station and found string cheese as a new alternative. It's not bad.
