I would advise to stick to Maho the first day. You can park the jeep right behind where you sit and keep your eyes on the luggage even while you are in the water.
Why risk the luggage and incurring an injury on the first day of vacation if there are other options. I would see how his knees hold up for a few days walking in the sand and on the uneven pavement in Cruz Bay before walking to Honeymoon. Try a morning hike there followed by lunch at the Caneel beach bar for some R and R.
Honeymoom is doable and I have bad knees. Made it there fine. On the walk back it was hot and my knees were starting to give out and I just hitched a ride on a golf cart. They were very accommodating. We were not staying at Caneel either.
Think my knees took more of a beating at Honeymoon from getting up and down from sitting in the sand as we had no beach chairs. Finally decided to sit on the big rock at the beginning of the beach.

I remember seeing that thing in the works when we were on STJ in November. That got finished relatively quick by island standards.
