Ya know, you're right. There are a lot of people who mention how tough the driving is. But, I actually think it's incredibly straightforward. There are steep sections of road, but there aren't really precipitous drop offs that will have you hurtling into the sea. Just drive the speed you're comfortable, and all will be well.
We love driving on STJ! I wouldn't classify any as scary. Some are more scenic and fun, but none are scary.

Dreamin, maybe you're thinking about posts that talk about driveways? I've seen some driveways that looked pretty crazy!
I'm a terrible, nervous rider, yet I enjoy riding on St. John roads very much. You're only going maybe 30 MPH.

All of the main roads are fine. The comments you are referring to are some of the side roads that go to certain villas. North Shore, Centerline, etc. are easy -- a few sharp curves now and then, but no problem.

thanks for the replies. I think I have maybe a little better feel now of the roads. I hear the cab ride from the airport to Red Hook is rough and no fun. I am going to start a new post with a different question by this weekend

Welcome and YES you can do anything you want...don't over think it...over plan it...and most of all don't over pack it.
