First off thank you to everyone for the kind replies and suggestions. we called the management company and they were so so with the response so I called the owner and she was more than accommodating, so accommodating I now need suggestions on a great gift to send a villa owner in the states or something we could purchase here and leave for her as a token of our gratitude.

I will now suck it up, take some shots of rum, use the big bambo's, consider sleep deprivation as a new buzz and my double bagged eyes as beauty marks.

On a side note I haven't seen or heard from big bambo since Biggie Smalls was still rapping. Nice island throw back for sure.

When things get tough....the tough get results. So glad you got results!! Sounds like your attitude will save the day. Have a wonderful time during the rest of your stay.

Maybe you'll get an idea of what to leave as a "thank you". Is there something that the villa needs that you may be able to buy (excluding A/C of course)?

Good to hear you're finding your rhythm...I was going to add that the Deli Groto at Mongoose Junction is a good place to cool down, get your wits about you and make some phone calls if you need to...great AC and food.

I'm always reluctant to over sell STJ to newbs and you're post is a good example of how tough it can be. I think it's the best vacation place ever, but you do have to work for it and know some things. It's definitely not an all-inclusive, ring a bell for service, type vacation.

Last suggestion, see if you can find Gibney Beach near Hawksnest (look for the gate with a bout 3 parking spots)...there's a spot on the far right side of the beach that stays shaded no matter what time of day it is...go there, stretch out a towel, do a couple of rum shots, and I promise you'll sleep like a baby.

Wondering exactly what your villa owners did for you? Personally, will agree with other posters in the never renting a property that has no A/C and it doesn't matter what time of the year it is. We are bug magnets and also being from the NE not used to the heat down there. We actually left a property early in STT because the A/C was blown and not able to be repaired and we were zombies at that point. Management was good and understood.

Good luck on the rest of your vacation. Glad to hear you have wonderful villa owners.

I wonder too what the villa owner did that helped so much??? Doesn't seem like they could install a/c, remove bugs, fix the stove and cool the tropics with a fell swoop but I hope whatever they did makes you happy and able to enjoy the rest of your vacation!!!! I will also second the idea of a few shots of rum and a beautiful beach for an afternoon siesta may improve the situation immensely! (repeat as required!!!)

And I can tell you if my stove didn't work - well then screw the cooking idea! And if you really want to eat at home - Uncle Joe's has the best bbq you could ask for - order up and schlep it home - add rum - and enjoy!!!

No seriously they are spraying for bugs, moving us to another unit and a bit more that is well beyond what I expected and I'd feel rude discussing the details in public.

The feeling I got from the owner about how much they just wanted us to be happy and enjoy our vacation was the most surprising.

How did St John even ever get populated without AC??? - I guess they must have lived a much simpler life.

I have to say that for most of my trips to STJ we managed just fine without AC. We never had it until the last few years and I confess that I'm spoiled now. My DH actually prefers no AC but I prefer to sleep in cool comfort.

Glad all was resolved to your satisfaction and hope you enjoy the rest of your stay and especially your sea horse rides .

A positive ending from a challenging start now enjoy the mystical magic from our favorite paradise STJ. It is truly infectious!

'Nuff said. Welcome to the forum by the way. I get the distinct feeling you might have been a lurker, as you certainly knew where to come to get some dialog. It sounds like it all worked out and the rest of your vacation should go swimmingly. It's nice to remind ourselves that there are good people out there who do the right thing.

Stick around. There's a lot of fantastic info. We're also suckers for a good trip report with fresh perspective from first-timers. Perhaps you can tell us about the sea horse rides. That sounds fantastic!:lol:

What I like about this tale is that it seems to have worked out for the most part in the end. There is nothing worse than being stuck and realizing that you're not getting help and need to take matters into your own hands. That room at the Westin (GACK!) starts looking good after a few days of that kind of mess.

We will be arriving next week for two weeks in the US & British VIs. We will have AC every night except the two nights at Ivan's Campground. My husband & I usually rough it at Maho Campground but have chosen to rent a villa with six of our closest friends for the first week on St. John. I'm counting the days!
