Disturbing to me that other Olympic athletes (Scotty Lago) gets tossed from the Closing Ceremonies and sent hom because of something stupid a 23 year old did after winning bronze, but these girls will be able to attend.

He denigrated the medal. And the old folks didn't like that so like any good parent they punished him.

Although, in hindsight if any of the old farts on the Olympic committee were able to score chicks with a medal I'm thinking they would.

This would never have happened under Avery Brundage. The poor lad would have been decapitated.

and if I was his Mom.. he would sport around a

Just because what's supposed to be a private celebration is transmitted worldwide by a tech savvy voyeur doesn't necessarily make it wrong.

Most of today's athletes (or at least their handlers) recognize the possibility that the Olympics offer for celebrity, sponsorship, endorsements, fortune and fame. Many of them have a very practiced public persona, but not all of them recognize this aspect of the Olympics. They have coaches but some also have agents. Shaun White and Apolo Ohno capitalized on their chance once again while Scotty Lago shot himself in the foot. Mike Eruzione has crafted a career for himself out of playing on the U.S. team that beat the Soviet Union. The Canadian women certainly played well, but once the game was over, I don't think that they showed a lot. I think that they'll be remembered more for the celebration than the victory. The American women, in their loss, showed class and dignity and will be remembered and respected for that.

I totally agree that what Scotty Lago did was completely wrong. However, I'm sure what the women's hockey team did also offended some. Now there is also the issue with the bobsledder and some assault charge, that to my understanding has no proof. Just sayin that if you are going to apply the rules to some, apply to all.

Wow this is quite the thread. I dont normally chim in on these type of discussions, but I guess this one is getting the best of me.

while I agree that bringing there celebrations on to the ice was not a very smart thing to do, but give me a break the fans had left the venue and then as so many mentioned there sits the papartziys with all there cameras locked & loaded ready to get whatever dirt they can.


How many times have there been shots of althetes with a bottle of champagne, you add a cigar & beer & it becomes inapropriate.

What difference would a friuty cooler or a glass of wine make, are we now judged by what we drink..
I for one am a BEER BABY & do not feel it makes me any less of a woman. Nor do I think it would have made any difference in the out cry of the media.

I wonder if there would be all this contraversy if it had been the mens team.

I fear the "olympic spirit" is a distant memory. Witness the acrobatics the skiers and snow boarders go through at the end of the run to whip off their equipment to insure the logos get caught on camera. The conspicuous Polo logo on all the ameircan clothing, etc.

Since I was the OP I will explain my thinking, the photo struck me as an exuberant display,in which the women were probably not unintentionally thumbing a nose at the establishment. Remember for these young woman who compete in a non traditional women's sport, there will be no NHL to go back to, probably no product endorsements after this is over, and I dare say no big time athletic scholarships are given out for women's hockey. They have toiled in relative anonymity, and reached what will likely be the end of their sports careers on stage in their home country. If they want to swig some champagne and light up a stogey I say go for it girls.

Maybe it is a double standard but I do see a difference between this and the simulation of oral sex which got that young man sent home. But that’s just me.

I love hockey. I'm a season ticket holder for our home team. I watch it on TV as much as possible. Hockey nut? Yup.

A chick that plays hockey, enjoys a can of beer, a stogey, and celebrates a big win in a big way = doesn't get any better than that !
