Teddy Salad: I think you are in the absolute best area. On this forum Akumal was recommended but I decided against it because, after a long flight I figured a longer drive to our resort, would be pushing my crew too hard. I really regret it. The beaches are better and the little town is so quaint--everyone was upbeat and laid back. I am sure you will have a great trip. And you are so lucky to fly direct!!
Did I describe Yal Ku accurately? It was kind of hard to put into words.
Have a great trip! Hopefully, you will give us a trip report!

Gina,
You described Yal-ku very well.
Here is a link to my trip report from last year. Not sure when I'll get around to posting a TR from the next trip. It would probably be pretty similar anyway.

I loved your trip report Teddy! After seeing it I am not going to post anymore pictures. Your Tulum pictures were fantastic!! Again, I wish I would have listen to the forum member who said to go to Akumal. It would have only been 30 minutes longer. Oh well, live and learn, right? I hope you have a great trip!
thank you Minde.

Thanks for sharing your trip report! We love Playa (although not quite as much as St. John). I'm also glad to hear your report on the resort's beach. We'll know to stay away from there. We have a couple of resorts down there with amazing beaches that we love! I also love Tulum!!

It sounds like you made the best of a difficult situation. Unfortunately, I don't think your experiences are that uncommom for Mexico, Al or not. Been there many times with similar results, but flying from Houston is almost as easy as going to Dallas, so some room for errors is offset. Your photos are great! You and your family are way brave...I'd never zip line or dive off a cliff. You rock!
We've never done an Al in Mexico, and haven't been to Mexico in a number of years, but I can vouch for one resort that is atypical for Mexico....Maroma. It is unbelievable. Not an Al, and you have to be over 16 to stay there, but if you want an upsale, romantic, service oriented, small resort, it's amazing. The food is incredible and there are so many wonderful touches that make it special, like the hand made organic soaps, the night time candle light everywhere, the privacy, the uncrowded beaches.....I could go on and on. Tripadvisor has some very recent reviews if you care to find out more about it. They have added a lot since we've been there, and it sounds like it's even better. I've about talked myself into another stay at Maroma. It's not a villa on STJ, but it's wonderful if you want a few days of pampering.

Hi Cypress!!
Maroma does sound really nice. I have seen it mentioned a lot on tripadvisor. When you go you should go ziplining and cliff diving!! It really is fun!!
Our next trip has been booked. We re going to Kauai this summer. I am looking forward to it. There are a couple of trip reports on the VIOL that I have looked at. Trip reports help so much!! I put more weight into the reports that I read here because I think tripadvisor has lost a little objectivity.
Take care!
