I take my own coffee with me on every trip and I have never had an issue, including international. I generally put it in my checked bags, but I have carried it on as well.
The only time I have a problem is when I carry on and I bring my brass hand grinder which is an 8" long cylinder about two inches across. It shows up pretty well on the x-ray so the TSA folks pull my bag and I tell them where it is and what it is. Then usually open it and see the left over ground coffee and let me go.
