Undertow is not as much a problem as face vs. coral and rubble or even sand. We saw a bride to be get facial fractures when she was tossed by a wave on Cinnamon Bay in 2002. In 2004 I saw a 4 year old get overwhelmed and have to be dragged in on Capoon's Bay on Tortola. These are not East Coast barrier island beaches that are just made of sand and more sand. By the time you have the opportunity to hit an undertow you've been beaten into chum against coral by the North Swell.equinox wrote:I think the concern was that undertows would make swimming unsafe.

Interesting. When I saw the swells, I thought,"No big deal". I've been in far worse surf every day at Jones Beach. But no one was swimming and we thought discretion was the better part of valor.

We just returned and the wind was from the E or ESE all week. The north shore was fantastic. I had expected to spend time on the south shore because of November swells but they never showed so it was a week at Denis, Salomon, Francis and Leinster.
