Connie - Wanted to add my prayers and thoughts as well. She is in the best place for a positive recovery.

Connie - Have been to CHOP with our daughter and I am sure they will give her the best possible care. Sending prayers your way for you and the family.

My sistern in law called me today and told me that Shannon has viral pneumonia, seasonal flu and the H1N1. She was crying and said that Shannon's Mom is just out of her mind.

THEN...I get a call from my Mother about 3 hours later and CHOP is letting Shannon go. They said there's nothing that they can do for her there and that they would send her home with all necessary medication and that the hospital is just loaded with cases.

I just can't believe it.

Connie, I am so sorry that your family's beautiful baby is so sick. Hopefully she will have a full recovery. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

The hospital told the family that if the other children come down with what they think is the flu to not even bring them in.

I just don't get this at all. Are there any nurses or doctors here that can explain this?

I have no idea why they discharged the baby (maybe her lungs are sounding good and her fever down?).

But as far as coming to the hospital for the flu- the typical process is you go to see your family doctor right away if the patient is high risk (asthma, pregnant, certain other conditions). Those patients get Tamiflu to help fight the virus. And they might get admitted to the hospital, like your niece.

Then the general "healthy" person with the flu is advised to stay home to avoid spreading it. They would only go to a physician or ER if they were not having a mild case and were having severe symptoms (shortness of breath, not responsive, etc...) or if they got way better and then worse later (which might indicate a secondary infection).

I think basically they want to use the resources on the sickest flu patients. So I get why they would tell the family not to go to the hospital (assuming they are otherwise healthy and it was a typical case of H1N1 and not severe).

That said, I am not sure why they discharged your niece, unless it is good news and she is recovering nicely?

disclaimer- I am not a doctor, but was in pharmaceuticals for 13 years. Know lots of medical information but by no means an expert!

I hope she gets better soon and that the rest of the family stays healthy!

p.s.

Hospitals are dirty places (even the best) with dangerous germs. So if your niece was discharged, that is not necessarily a bad thing if her condition is greatly improved.
