I honestly do not recall this having been much of an issue for us and we generally go in late January/early February. We are generally so happy to be out of the frozen tundra of the great plains that the water in the pool and ocean in STJ both seem warm to us. I can imagine if a pool were seriously sun-deprived it could be an issue. We usually rent on the south or west side of the island and you tend to get pretty good sun in that area of the island.

Jim, the pool at the villa we rented on the South Shore got direct sun all day. But, the constant trade winds made the pool a no fun zone. Again, Wisconsin guy here...we know cold are no wimps when it comes to the cold. But, the pool at this villa never got warmer than our lake in April.

The owners knew it because they, at one time, had a solar tarp to put over the pool to try to keep it warm. Taking the tarp on and off was a pain in the ass...not to mention chasing the tarp when the wind would blow it away.

Now we rent villas that are alee.

I grew up on the north east. I would regularly get in the ocean in RI in June.

We rented two houses with cold pools.

The first was down right cold and I was the only one in the group to get it. I did it on the last day just to be able to say someone used the pool that my husband insisted was an absolute necessity. This was late Jan/early Feb.

The second was cooler than most people would like because it was shaded. A few of us got in and out over the week. This was late Feb/early March.

At the other end of the spectrum, we rented a house on Maria Bluff that had a pool that felt like bath water. We used it all the time and swam at night almost every night. That house had full sun all day. This was mid Feb.

Pete--Just teasing about the wimps comment. I know you cheeseheads understand cold (if not football).

I may get my just rewards anyway---I read a comment that the pool at the house we are renting in January tends to be cool and I blithely ignored it but I may regret that decision if its cool and windy that week.

Yep, the pools with the south shore exposure that get major trade winds need a warm date to combat those winds. Its not the water temperature for us, but the wind. I'll take that western sunset view any time. But, that's when the "hot in the afternoon" whinging usually begins. Pick your favorite whine, mine is hot.

We used to always require a villa with a pool but we soon stopped after so many were too cold to actually use. I think the pools with the most direct sunlight for the most hours seem the best. Most pools don't seem to be heated except by the sun. The electric bills can be sinful. When it came time to build our rental house in Coral Bay we never even considered it. I know we lose rentals because of it but to spend $50-$100,000 for a pool that you can't hang out in seemed silly. Now a nice warm spa in the evenings, thats nice.

Lazylane, was the pool cold at Adeste? What month were you there? We'll be there end of July.

I am from the deep south where the pools actually get miserably hot mid-summer. I have posted a review of Seawatch where I commented that the pool was too cold to comfortably swim in.

The problem with that pool was that it didn't seem to get much sun exposure. My idea of "swimming" when on STJ is more to be able to hang out in the water with a drink in my hand looking out at great views; it's not to swim laps or play around like kids would do. I would assume the kids would be doing more than just floating around so they might not have had an issue with it.

Bay House's pool.... what's the verdict on that one? It looks like it's in a sunny location.

Outta the five places we've stayed I would say only one was cool. It was fine in the day with the sun but too cold at night to lounge around in. I think cold is very idividual. My wife might think somethings cold and I am just right. Many comments are made about the ocean being cool at times and I've never found it that way, although the latest we have been there is November.

Hi greyhoundmom - well, the pool at Adeste was let's say "tolerable" - We go in early December each year. But we don't hang out in the pool a lot - just float mostly and the pool area is usually our "hang out" area for partying/lazing around with our group. The last 2 times we have stayed on the other side of the bay from Adeste - now those pools were really cold - not enough sun during the day as the mountain blocked it! I have never thought the sea was ever too cold to swim in December, but I know a lot of the locals always think we are crazy as they think it is too cold to swim in December!! Come to Ohio in December - now that's cold!!
