We always visit Elaine Ester in Cruz Bay and buy something. We love her wood framed tiles...the colors are so bright and the pictures are very whimsical. I also order a calendar from her every year and frame some of the prints.

Serial lurker here, adding to the conversation. I have to say that I am very surprised no one has mentioned Hermon Smith. Does it get more local?

For those unfamiliar, he carves primitive faces out of Lignum Vitae. Lignum Vitae is the densest wood on the planet. The stuff sinks like stone.

Hermon's pieces can be small enough to wear as pendants or large enough to stand alone as sculpture. His work is found all over the island. It is unmistakable.

The only other time I have seen his name posted was when my wife responded to a survey about what people bring home from the islands.

Is there something I should know about Hermon that would explain the lack of references to him?

Wow everyone, great ideas! You guys never cease to amaze me. You are always so willing to share! I cannot wait to start spending my money on great things to take home to keep STJ close while I'm away from her.
