The pool would definitely add value to your cottage, and make it more appealing to renters. I would add it if you can.

I have young boys and a pool is a must for us. That being said, we travel in the summers and would not (and did not) use one in the winters. Since your pool would get afternoon sun, I think that would be a plus!

We wouldn't even consider a villa without a pool. It's a neccessary diversion.


No matter what type of vacation we've gone on, the kids and hubby seem to end the day in a pool to pass the time while I get ready for the evening.

A decent pool (not the white inserts) is a requirement for us. It's part of the daily routine and honestly we wouldn't rent a villa without one.

I would consider no pool if the villa was the right fit for us. Husband, on the other hand, would not.

With the travelling group, a pool is an absolute requirement yet for 2 out of 4 trips, I was the only one who got in the pool.

Truth be told, the only reason your villa isn't on our short list for this year is because it does not have a pool

I might be able to live without a pool, but my husband considers it a necessity. And with at least a dozen places that are comparably priced with similar ammenties and also pools, it's kind of a no-brainer

As another poster mentioned...what a deliema to have.

A pool is a must for us. We love the beaches during the day but use the pool when we get back from there & some nights.

I am with Gromit - I skip rightpast the white insert pools (I think they are refered to as Wally pools). Oh, yes, a pool is required when we rent a house.

Growing up in cali I'm more of a beach girl myself, but my kids require a pool, so we rent villas with pools. Honey and our daughter also like the hot tub.

Someday when I grow up and have my own vacation villa, it will have a pool because it does add rental appeal.

If it were just Honey and I, we'd forgo the pool.

Having said that, my fave rental we've done in the caribbean did not have a pool and we will go back. The kids loved it too, even without said pool.

Question in today's market if the payback is years I would wait. If you are trying to increase rentals in tough market. Is shortterm answer

If you do, definitely look into an ionized pool (no chlorine). It is the softest, cleanest water, kills algae, pathogens and is easy on the skin. Generally pays for itself in two years. The owner of Orion's Hill has an ionized pool and it was heaven for 2 weeks last summer. He lives next door and would periodically put a motorized round thingy (I'm so technical) in the pool. He said the water was always clean enough to drink from. Just a thought.....

That chlorine debate has been a hot topic around our house. I've done a bit of reading about how bad chlorine is for you........not just your hair and skin, but internally also. My Dr. even recommends chlorine filters on your kitchen sink and shower head. That may be a little to much "wellness" info for most of you, but some of you might find it interesting. My husband is not ready to switch to a salt water pool (that's what we call them here), but I think the conversion would pay for itself in a few year.

It's just the two of us,no kids,and we would not rent a house without a pool. The size of the house is no big deal to us because we want to spend as much time outside when in the islands. After a morning at the beach we love nothing more than spending the afternoon in and around the pool.

My doctor also recommends filters to get rid of chlorine, among other things.

The water where we live is way over-chlorinated. If I’m gone for a few days and come home it smells like a swimming pool in our house when I run the water or open the freezer (from the ice).
