Pretty sure that's a palometa...we love these guys! One afternoon at Francis, we were standing knee deep in water, and two palometas were swimming around, occasionally nibbling (gently) at our shins!

Thanks all! I looked up pompano, spadefish and palometa online and lark22 I think palometa is right. I have some great shots of them gently nibbling our shins too - I'll try to figure out how to post a picture.

I agree that it is probably a palometa. My book notes that it is also called a "longfin pompano" as a common name so we are on the same track. The book also notes that an entire school will swirl around a diver. We saw entire schools in what we assumed was a feeding frenzy, flipping and jumping out of the water...all at salt pond. One person told us they were french grunts, another said they were jacks. My book tells me the palometa is in the jack family so now this is what I think they were.
I LOVE the octopus in the ledge pix and thanks for the compliment. I would have liked to see how big he was. I thot he looked big tucked into that space. Thanks to the friendly European guy that pointed him out to me!!!!

My 3 year-old is sitting on my lap right now and is enjoying your pictures. So am I. We are discussing going to the beach, swimming with fish-ies and flying in a "beach airplane" The picture of the airport is sort of blowing his mind.

Great shots.
Cape Air has a great rep on the BVI boards for those who prefer going into Beef Island on Tortola.
Do not see Cape Air mentioned here much (if at all?) as an alternative means SJU/STT. (Me, I've always wanted to do the seaplane...)

We used Cape Air a couple times between SJU and STT. Delayed luggage annoyed me a bit but it wouldn't stop me from using them again.
One nice thing for us is we could fly Cape Air in the on a weekend high season morning when the STT airport was empty and catch a direct US Air flight out of SJU and get home late afternoon/early evening.

This was our first experience w/ CApe Air and we only did it on the way home as there was not a direct flight back up to Newark in Dec midweek. BUT... I wouldn't hesitate flying Cape Air especially coming home.Everything about the flight was PERFECT!
Can't remember where I read it but recently saw that baggage problems people have in STT often happen from flights that go thru San Juan, so the blame seemed to be placed on the San JUan facility for mishandling.

Seems like having checked bags transferred to a different carrier even if code shared is asking for trouble at SJU. Might be better to fetch your checked bag from the mainland carrier and hump it over to Cape Air.
