Re: Zika is essentially over in the VI

Ummm.... Maybe so, but 5 people I know on St John have Zika right now, although I'm not sure if any of them are going to the trouble to try to get tested.

Re: Water Quality Testing Results

No, not sure where you got that info, it's not the former dump-- that was across from Starfish market where the sewerage treatment plant is now. The Great Cruz Bay problem is mainly the live -aboard boats.

The photos show some early transplants from the mainland-- Ron and Sarah Morrisette fishing on Congo Cay, Nancy Gibney and Doris Jadan riding horses on Caneel Beach.

Re: Where would you go?

You may want to check if you can get to Vieques or Culebra with your tickets, because Capeair charges for two separate flights to get there from StThomas.
My vote would be Nevis for an experience very different to the VI, but beautiful and low key, with wonderful history and hiking.

Re: Is everything Brown or Lush and Green

No widespread rain yet, although some parts of the island got an inch from 1 or 2 clouds this past week. The driest area is the normally lush north shore, which has received less than one inch for April and May combined. St Thomas, except for the very east end near Red Hook, has had floods this past...

Re: Weather patterns

But looking at the long-term record, May is the most variable month--so there have been a number of years when the May rain misses us, and those are generally the disastrously dry years. What has been unusual is how long it's been since we've had a really painful drought.

Re: Survey: power outages during your stay(s)?

Although st Thomas has had plenty of outages in recent years, many of them have not affected St. John. The current batch of rolling outages is the most ( non-storm related) I can remember in many, many years.. Maybe 25?

Sargassum, the free-floating seaweed that covers vast areas of the Sargasso Sea, in the middle of the Atlantic. The currents have been bringing more than usual the past 2-3 years, although there used to be fairly frequent visitations in the 1960s and 1970s.

Re: Chikungunya (Chik V)

You are correct that most cases are not being reported. There are still a fair number of new cases popping up, with anything from a couple of days of fever and mild joint pain to weeks of extreme fatigue and pain. Women over 50, and others with pre-existing arthritic conditions, are apparently the mo...

Re: Seaweed in the VI

While it's true that there hasn't been sargassum at this level in many years, it's not a totally new thing. Comparing notes with other Virgin Islanders of my generation (oldish) we remember this more than once in the 1960s, and even earlier...

Re: Coral Bay Marina

Actually, the marina as proposed is larger than any other marina in the Virgin Islands. It is also the most incomplete application ever seem for a major project, and the principals have no devopment or marina experience.

Please don't take anything you read in Tradewinds seriously--especially since the return of the "newspaper's" owner earlier this year!
